Cookie policy
Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. Ours keep contributors signed in and, only if you allow it, tell us anonymously which stories people read. We don't use advertising cookies.
Cookies we set
| Cookie | Set by | What it's for | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga_ga_* | Google Analytics | Counts visits and which pages are read, so we know what readers find useful. It doesn't tell us who you are. | 2 years |
mmg_consent | Us | Remembers your cookie choices, so we don't ask again. Always set once you choose. | 6 months |
mmg_session | Us | Keeps contributors and editors signed in. Only set if you sign in. | Up to 30 days |
mmg_2fa_*mmg_pk_challenge | Us | Checks a second sign-in step, such as a passkey or authenticator code. Only set while you sign in. | Minutes |
mmg_impersonatormmg_view_asmmg_goauth_state | Us | Staff tools only: the way back after viewing the site as another person, a preview of a desk layout, and connecting Google Analytics. Never set for readers. | Up to 8 hours |
Videos, players and comments
Some articles include videos and music players from YouTube, Spotify, Vimeo and Mixcloud, and can show Disqus comments. These services set their own cookies when they load, so unless you allow them they wait until you choose to load one. Their own cookie policies explain what they do.
Your choices
You can change your choices at any time with Cookie settings, at the foot of every page. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser; the site still works without them, but you won't be able to sign in.
